Travelling to Tartu

Schengen – Visa

When arriving to Estonia, all participants must present a valid passport with the appropriate visa (if required). It is not possible to apply for a visa at the border. Participants who need to apply for a visa must do so in their country of residence. Estonia is part of the Schengen Area. 

Please note that visa invitation letters will be issued only to confirmed on-site participants who registered and already have paid the conference fee.

Getting to Tartu

Delegates arriving/departing individually are kindly requested to make their own travel arrangements. 

By plane

You can take a fly through Tallinn or Riga. From Tallinn Lennart Meri airport and Riga International Airport you can hop on a Lux Express bus to Tartu or rent a car. 

There is an option to fly directly to Tartu also. From Tartu Airport you can take the express bus to Tartu City. Check the airport shuttle timetable: https://www.tartu.ee/en/airport-shuttle

By bus

Take a bus from the bus stand next to the airport. Bus trip from Tallinn to Tartu takes about 2 hours and costs around 20 €. Bus accepts Visa/Mastercard.

Bus trip from Riga to Tartu takes 4,5 hours and costs around 30 €.

Also we advise getting your ticket well ahead of time, as the seats fill up fast. 

By train

Take a train from Tallinn. A train stop is around a 15 minute walk way from the airport. Train trip to Tartu takes about 2,5 hours and costs around 14 €.

A train ride from Riga is an option too. Schedules and tickets via Pasažieru Vilciens.

By car

Ride from Tallinn to Tartu takes 2 hours and 3,5 hours from Riga.

Getting around in Tartu

Bicycle or scooter

The fastest and greenest choice for getting around in Tartu is to choose a rental bike. Tartu Smart Bike Share is a public, self-service bike share system for short trips.

To do this, you need to download the app, choose a suitable plan, and start riding.

There are also available Bolt bikes and electric scooters.

Bus

To reach the Estonian National Museum (ERM), choose bus number 7 or 25. Both buses depart from Tartu Bus Station. Nr 25 also departs from the train station. You can find ticket information on this page: tartu.pilet.ee. It is really easy to pay for your bus ride – just swipe your contactless bank card at the validator when entering the bus. 

Taxi or car

The fastest way to reach the destination is by taxi or car. There are various options for this. You can either flag down a taxi on the street or order a taxi through the Bolt or Forus app.

Expo areas

The conference features two exposition areas, the first on site at the Estonian National Museum, and the second in the online environment, where companies and organisations have presentation spaces, organise interactive discussions with attendees, introduce fresh tech solutions for governments, and generate business leads.

Estonian National Museum

One of the largest, most modern, and stylish museums in both the Baltics and Europe. The Estonian National Museum preserves the feeling of continuity and tradition that resonates well with the Conference’s 10th anniversary. This is the site for the Conference panels and sessions.

Barge Centre Theme Park

The Barge Centre Theme Park complex creates a unique environment right at the waterfront. The triangular buildings and shelters located just on the shore of river Emajõgi function as a unified complex, a village of bargemen discreetly tucked away from the city. This is the site for the welcome reception.

AHHAA Science Centre

The networking event will take place in the Science Centre AHHAA, the most modern and largest research centre in the Baltic States. In AHHAA, the networking among participants will be nicely linked to the topics of the Conference – technology, innovations, and open-minded attitude for new ventures. Weather

In the end of May, the Estonian weather can change quickly. There are often sunny, rainy and windy days in Tartu and the temperature varies from +13C to +20C.

The power supply is 220-230 volts (plug: two round prongs).

Money and banks
Estonia uses the Euros and you can pay with card (also contactless) everywhere.  ATMs can be found all around Tartu. NB! Estonian ATMs give you your money first, then return the card. The machine asks you if you are done with your transactions, then it will give you back the card. ENG language options are available. 

Internet
Public Wi-Fi is available in nearly every café, restaurant and hotel. We recommend using eSIM via the app Airalo if you wish to purchase larger amount of data. It’s very affordable.

Interpretation

The official working language for e-Governance Conference will be English. Delegations who need interpretation are kindly asked to bring along their personal interpreter.
